The international bachelor’s degree in East Asia (IBO) at the University of Hamburg offers intensive language training, well-founded imparting of specialist knowledge of East Asian culture and a selected regional focus on history and the present. The course takes place mainly in small groups with the latest technical equipment and personal support. The course includes a stay abroad at a university in the respective region, and there are also course-related introductions to scientific work and targeted career orientation. Hamburg is the cradle of German Sinology. Chinese culture has been researched and taught at the Hamburg institute for almost a century.


The IBO with a focus on Sinology imparts basic specialist knowledge of the language and culture of China. This is done by acquiring spoken and written language skills and by acquiring factual knowledge about Chinese culture and society. Special consideration is given to the regional connection between China, Korea and Japan in historical, political, social and cultural terms. The course includes a semester abroad in the People's Republic of China or in Taiwan.
