The art history subject researches the origin, uniqueness, function and effect of works of art from the most diverse areas of fine arts: architecture, sculpture, painting, graphics and applied arts as well as design, photography and audiovisual media. The Master's degree in Art History imparts comprehensive knowledge in the field of history and theory of the fine arts as well as methodical competence in dealing with the different epochs and genres of art and their specific research problems. A broad spectrum of art historical research approaches is represented in research and teaching, including political iconography, material iconography, reception aesthetics and the history of science.
Subjects of study include the material and ideal requirements of art, artistic materials and techniques, the history of artist training, art theory, art criticism and aesthetics. The aim is in particular the ability to carry out independent and critical scientific work, to transfer methods and knowledge, and to apply scientific theories, methods and knowledge.

  • Language skills in English and another modern foreign language
