Art history researches the emergence, character, function and impact of works of art as well as of design, photography and audiovisual media in European culture and history since late antiquity. It deals with the material and ideal prerequisites for these works of art, the artistic materials and techniques, the history of artist training, art pedagogy as well as art theory and aesthetics. In addition, the history of art history, methods and institutions are considered.


The bachelor's program imparts basic knowledge in the field of history and theory of the fine arts as well as methodical competence in dealing with the different topics, epochs and genres of art and their specific research problems. Graduates should be able to critically and creatively apply scientific knowledge, methods and theories within the different areas of art history work.
