Prehistoric and early historical archeology is a cultural-historical science. It researches the cultural history before the onset of written traditions and also the material culture of the Middle Ages. The aim of the course is to acquire basic archaeological skills, ie basic specialist knowledge, methods and work techniques based on selected key topics. This includes in particular the development and presentation of scientific questions and the ability to classify and interpret archaeological sources in their cultural and historical context, but also the understanding and linking of theoretical and methodological foundations.

In this course, practical elements are of great importance: close cooperation with museums and the preservation of archaeological monuments offers students opportunities for project- and practice-related studies. The teaching program is enriched by numerous external lecturers from archaeological professional practice. A ten-day excursion is also an integral part of the course.
