Even if the languages are no longer spoken today, Latin and ancient Greek are the preferred access to the self-understanding of contemporary European culture and its central cultural techniques. The bachelor's degree in "Classical Philology" primarily imparts scientifically sound knowledge of the Latin and Ancient Greek languages and literature as well as the respective historical and socio-cultural context. This involves both the ability to describe and analyze literary texts and linguistic phenomena in a reflective and method-oriented manner and to use scientific aids with confidence.

The aim is to be able to confidently present results orally and in writing and to independently draft scientific texts. In addition to imparting key qualifications for various professional fields (ie communicative, media and cultural skills), an essential goal is the ability to analyze and solve problems. A specialization in Greek studies (ancient Greek) or Latin studies (Latin) is planned as part of the course.

The courses “Greek Studies” or “Latin Studies” are offered as minor subjects (for students of other main subjects).
