What are the functions of human language? And what are the characteristics of different languages? These are just a few of the questions that students in the General Linguistics bachelor's program work on to answer. The course imparts basic knowledge of the most important problems and problem solutions in the subject, in linguistic terminology and in the methods used. Courses in phonology (sound theory), morphology (form theory) and syntax (sentence theory) are compulsory.
In the elective area, students can choose between language typology, sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics. The focus of the Hamburg course is on non-Indo-European languages (such as Uralic, African, Asian, etc.) and on languages that are not taught in German schools. Using their example, the description and analysis of human language is treated. Another part of the course deals with the historical, social and political conditions under which speakers maintain, adapt or give up their language.
