Greece is considered the origin of democracy, the country's history is the starting point for a wide variety of developments throughout Europe. The "Neo-Greek and Byzantine Studies" course imparts scientifically sound knowledge of Byzantine and modern Greek literature and culture in their respective social and intellectual history contexts. This also includes basic knowledge of the recent history of Greece as well as basic knowledge of current events in politics, media and society.

A special feature of the course is the focus on Greece and Cyprus and the obligatory stay in one of these two countries. The students are familiarized with essential literary and cultural studies issues and, in addition to subject-specific qualifications, acquire the ability to relate these to other problem areas in a later career and to apply them in a scientifically reflective manner. As part of the course, students learn the modern Greek language at a level that enables them to communicate confidently, both orally and in writing.

The courses Neo-Greek Studies (75 CP) or Byzantine Studies (45 CP) are offered as minor subjects (for students of other main subjects). In the Neo-Greek Studies minor, students learn Modern Greek, and in Byzantine Studies, they learn Ancient Greek.
