The focus of the Master's program "Languages ​​and Cultures of Southeast Asia" is on the languages, cultures, history and societies of this important, culturally diverse Asian region, which is currently experiencing rapid development. The Master offers three different specializations: "Austronesian Studies" (Indonesian and Malaysian Studies), "Thai Studies" and "Vietnam Studies". All three areas of focus are closely linked to the research areas of the Asia-Africa Institute, such as manuscript cultures, modern literature, history, religion and society. In addition, the compulsory module "Southeast Asian Studies: Theories and Methods", in which the latest research methods are taught, offers students direct access to current discussions in international science.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be admitted to the master's program:
  • A university degree (bachelor's, master's or state examination) in a "Southeast Asia degree" or
  • Proof of successfully completed courses in the fields of linguistics, literature, history, society and religion in Southeast Asia
  • Depending on the chosen focus, proof of language skills in Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian or Malay studies), Thai (Thai studies) or Vietnamese (Vietnamese studies)
  • Sufficient knowledge of English
