The master's program "Indology and Tibetology" is fundamentally research-oriented, it also imparts knowledge with application and professional relevance. During the course of study, in-depth knowledge of the subjects Indology and Tibetology is imparted in particularly relevant fields of research and application. This includes the ability to work independently on primary sources in one of the languages ​​of the three majors, the ability to conduct theoretical and reflective research in the area of ​​the chosen profile, and to engage in argumentative academic discussion in different cultural contexts.

In joint interdisciplinary modules, the students are taught the general methodological principles necessary for later work with professional practice, in consulting or research. In addition, by choosing a profile at a high scientific level, the students specialize in one of the following three areas:

  • Indology with a focus on Sanskrit (old and middle Indian languages, literatures, religion and philosophy)
  • Indology with a focus on Tamil Studies (texts and manuscripts in classic Tamil, basic knowledge of contemporary literary language)
  • Tibetology (historical sources in classical Tibetan written language; knowledge of the contemporary language)

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be admitted to the master's program:
  • Degree in the international BA course "Languages ​​and Cultures of the Indian Subcontinent and Tibet" or a comparable degree from a German or foreign university
  • or
  • a first professional qualification in any subject with South Asian or Tibetan courses/modules
  • Language skills in English
  • Depending on the selected profile: Language skills in Sanskrit or Tamil (Indology profile) or Tibetan (Tibetology profile)
