The aim of studying historical musicology is the ability to perceive music as an aesthetic object and to understand and analyze it in its historical context from late antiquity to the present day and in connection with other arts. This means comprehensive knowledge of musical works as well as familiarity with the writings on the theory and aesthetics of music, but also awareness of the changing functions of music in the social context.

The students learn different music-historical methods, eg source criticism, style criticism, analysis or hermeneutics. This should enable them to acquire basic technical and methodological skills and, above all, to be able to objectively consider music in practice and theory and to deal with primary and secondary sources. The bachelor's degree imparts qualifications both for professional practice and for the continuation of studies in the master's program.
