The master’s degree serves to deepen linguistic, technical and methodological knowledge, but above all to develop the ability to work independently and scientifically. A semester abroad at a Chinese or European partner university is also an integral part of the master’s degree.
In addition to the methodologically reflected handling of Chinese sources, the focus is on theoretical approaches from cultural studies and the history of concepts and ideas. As a student, you will acquire the ability to evaluate transdisciplinary theoretical concepts from a sinological perspective and to make them usable for specific research questions. The systematic orientation to questions - not to agreed answers - finally leads to the master's thesis, in which you work on a self-chosen topic scientifically.
Sinology has a long tradition in Hamburg: Hamburg is the cradle of German sinology. Chinese culture has been researched and taught at the Hamburg Institute for almost a century.
