The international bachelor's degree in History, Languages and Cultures of the Near East imparts basic knowledge of the past and present, cultures, religions and languages of the target region. The main goal of the course is to acquire the ability to analyze complex historical and cultural contexts and thus to reflect on and classify current events. The acquisition of good passive and active language skills in at least one of the main languages of the Middle East (Persian, Arabic or Turkish) and basic knowledge of up to two other languages/language varieties is an integral part of the course.
The focus on Islamic Studies imparts knowledge about the history, culture, politics, literature and religious and legal traditions of the Near East and North Africa, especially the Arab countries, in the pre-modern and modern periods.
A one-semester stay abroad in the focus region is part of the course.
