The master’s degree in German-language literatures deals with German-language literature in its entirety – from the early Middle Ages to the present day. Students analyze literary texts in the respective cultural, social and aesthetic context, starting from current media and cultural studies issues. These are supplemented by established literary parameters such as genre questions, literary theory or social and scientific history.
A specific feature of the course is the choice of a study profile in the field of "Older German Literature", "New German Literature" or in one of the interdisciplinary research fields "Theater and Media", "Gender and Culture" or "Intercultural Literature and Media Studies". The students are involved in the main research areas of the department, which range from the history and theory of theater, feminist literature and cultural studies and computer philology to the social history of literature and blended learning. The overarching goal of the master's program is the ability to independently formulate complex and innovative topics in the field of German-language literature and its cultural contexts and to develop them in a scientifically sound manner.
