Japanese Studies in Hamburg has a long tradition - after all, it is the oldest institution in Germany that deals scientifically with Japan. The Master's degree in Japanese Studies is research-oriented, but at the same time also teaches skills that are relevant to applications and jobs. The subject of Japanese Studies is the study of Japanese culture in the past and present based on Japanese sources. Your studies at Master's level should enable you to work independently with Japanese primary sources and to work on scientific questions of history and the present.
Focuses that can be deepened in the master’s program are Japanese literature, language and cultural history, religious and intellectual history, as well as Japanese politics and society. A one-semester stay abroad (optionally in the target region) is part of the course.
