The sign languages of the deaf are understood as minority languages. From this perspective, sociolinguistic problems arise, such as the consequences of non-recognition of linguistic human rights or the question of the pictorial quality of sign language. The latter contradicts the Western understanding of language and theoretically challenges various disciplines. The bachelor's degree in Sign Languages provides specialist knowledge of sign languages and deaf communities. The students should acquire competence in German Sign Language (DGS) and the scientific methods to critically reflect on this specialist knowledge. Central subjects of the subject are the sign languages of the deaf, especially the DGS, as well as the theoretical analysis of them.
