The aim of the master’s degree in “Historical Musicology” is in-depth knowledge of European-Western music history and the ability to deal with music-historical issues in a scientifically reflective manner. The students gain a well-founded, structured overview of the entire history of music and, depending on their inclination, acquire special expertise for one of the four main historical sections "Music in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance", "Music history with a focus on music in the early modern period", "Music of the Classical and 19th Century Music” or “Modern and Postmodern Music”.

The students learn to apply the relevant methods of the subject within the framework of independent research and to work transdisciplinary. The degree program is research-oriented, with an accompanying emphasis on the training of job-related skills in the areas of written and oral expression and science management.
