In recent years, due to economic development, specifically: globalization, there has been a reorientation of classic engineering education. The trend is moving away from purely technical specialization in a defined area towards thinking in the larger context of the overall technical and economic complex. The bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering (HWI) meets these requirements by combining the course content of the two subjects.

The courses offered by two Hamburg universities make the course varied and interesting. The University of Hamburg is responsible for economics education, while the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) brings in the natural sciences and engineering content. The course, which cannot be chosen as a minor, also includes a nine-week technical internship to gain practical experience. The HWI course can be seen as unique in Germany due to the combination of an application-oriented engineering education with a research-oriented economic education.
