The subject of the Master's program "English as a World Language" are the so-called "New Englishes". This refers to the variants of English that have established themselves as the lingua franca in the former colonies in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean (pidgin and creole languages). A change in the status, function and structure of these language varieties can currently be observed. Not only do they go through a process of adapting to the local languages, they are also establishing themselves more and more as independent varieties. Both language-internal and external factors of change are examined as part of the master's program.
The Master's in English as a World Language (ENGAGE) is a joint program of the Institute for English and American Studies and the Asia-Africa Institute. Students are given the opportunity to conduct independent research during their studies and are intensively supervised during their studies.
