The European Masters "Human Rights and Democratization" is a one-year, multidisciplinary academic postgraduate program supported by 41 European universities and institutes. The course combines theoretical and practical approaches in order to teach students about human rights and democratization. The range of courses includes lectures, workshops, tutorials, methodical and practical exercises and accompanying seminars. The graduates should be able to deal with the political, social and economic aspects of the topics covered from different perspectives.

The organization of the program, which is co-financed by the EU Commission, is in the hands of the European Inter-University Institute for Human Rights and Democratization (EUIC) based in Venice. Students spend the first semester in Venice and the second at one of the partner universities of the course, with the exception of a university in the country of origin. The University of Hamburg has been involved since the start of the program in 1997 by teaching during the first semester at the seat of the course in Venice. The Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) supervises up to three students per year during the second semester.
