Physical oceanography plays an important role in answering interdisciplinary questions in climate research and the investigation of marine ecosystems. The master's program imparts in-depth knowledge, skills and practice in the areas of ocean dynamics, interaction between the ocean and the climate system, interdisciplinary qualifications and scientific work. The Institute of Oceanography is part of the University of Hamburg's climate campus and offers the best conditions for research-related studies with an excellent student-teacher ratio and an extensive range of electives.

Oceanographers work in basic research at universities and in non-university research institutions as well as in research application, e.g. B. in the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, the German Weather Service, the environmental agencies or water and shipping directorates. In addition, they work for space agencies and research service providers, energy suppliers, in the offshore industry or shipping companies.
