Africa as the cradle of mankind and an up-and-coming continent is increasingly becoming the focus of politics, business and research. Understanding African languages is vital to each of these areas. The three-year bachelor's degree in "African Languages and Cultures" deals with the languages of Africa and the methods used to research them, as well as the social and cultural conditions of language realities on the African continent. The range of courses includes the languages Amharic, Hausa and Swahili. Students can set a technical and regional focus with a method profile.

Around half of the total range of courses consists of acquiring communicative skills in an African language. In addition to Amharic/Ge̕ez, Hausa or Swahili, students can choose one of three methodological subject profiles:

  • Profile 1, language documentation and analysis: linguistic orientation with a focus on comparative language topics and methods
  • Profile 2, language in context: cultural-linguistic orientation with historical, social, (oral) literary and language contact-oriented questions and methods
  • Profile 3, Manuscript Cultures/Ethiopian Studies: philological orientation with a focus on the analysis of written and oral sources on the history and cultures of Ethiopia and Eritrea.

In addition, there is an internship that can and should be completed in a field in which a future career is conceivable.
