The master's degree in Modern Greek Studies is a literary and cultural studies course that imparts comprehensive knowledge of the modern Greek language and literature as well as the respective historical and socio-cultural context - including a look back at the Middle Ages and the early modern period. In the Master’s program, knowledge of modern Greek is deepened, literary competence (based on examples from modern Greek as well as medieval and early modern Greek literature) as well as knowledge of literary and cultural history are expanded through independent analysis of exemplary texts, authors, epochs and genres.
A stay in Greece as part of a summer school is an integral part of the course. In the cross-university study area, the Hamburg Institute for Greek and Latin Philology works together with the renowned partner institutes of the FU Berlin and the LMU Munich.

  • a first professional qualification from a German or internationally recognized foreign university in a humanities, social sciences or behavioral sciences course.
  • Mastery of modern Greek, both written and spoken
