In the age of globalization it is more necessary than ever to describe and understand cultural practices and representations in their diversity and at the same time uniqueness. Culture, the central subject of ethnology, is understood as the knowledge and behavior that a group of people shares and passes on. The groups studied in ethnology are extremely diverse, ranging from nomadic pastoralists, farming communities, indigenous minorities, political refugees living in diaspora, to neighborhood cultures. There is no regional limit. Rather, Hamburg's ethnology has a global comparative perspective, which is also reflected in the high diversity of the institute's regional focus (Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Europe).

A special feature of the course is the intensive supervision of the students. Due to the institute's focus on ethnographic field research methods and globally comparative methods, the bachelor's degree in ethnology in Hamburg is characterized by the fact that it combines the local and global perspective in teaching and research in a particularly comprehensive manner.
