Knowing the past in order to understand the present and shape the future – this is the only way progress can work. In the bachelor's degree in history, students acquire knowledge about the course of history in different epochs and cultures as well as about the basic conditions of historical change. A central goal of the course is to impart well-founded skills in the methodical and theoretical handling of the relevant materials (sources and illustrations). The students should independently develop a knowledge base on a historical topic by researching, reading and processing and critically evaluating the information obtained.

The University of Hamburg and the Université Bordeaux Montaigne offer an integrated German-French bachelor's degree with history as a major and classical archaeology, French, geography, German studies or art history as a minor (HamBord). After a successful application and subsequent enrollment for the history course with one of the suitable minor subjects, an internal application for this joint course is possible.

Admission Requirements

For the bachelor's degree (main subject), knowledge of Latin to the extent of the small Latinum is required, which must be proven by the end of the second semester.
An additional requirement for admission to the course - including the minor subject - is knowledge of two modern foreign languages, which must be proven by three years of schooling in the first modern foreign language and two years of schooling in the second modern foreign language.
If such proof cannot be provided with the application for admission, equivalent knowledge can still be proven by certification of a state or university examination by the time of re-registration for the third semester at the latest.
