With the enlargement of the EU, the Eastern European countries have become increasingly important partners in culture, business and politics. The Slavic Studies course imparts basic specialist knowledge of the Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. This knowledge is deepened on the basis of selected thematic focal points and the example of two Slavic languages (Polish, Russian, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian (BKS) or Czech) and their literature. The course enables students to critically examine theories and methods and to independently formulate and work on scientific problem areas. The students acquire central techniques of scientific and systematic work, research and written and oral presentations.

Students choose a profile language as well as a supplementary language, which is usually studied to a lesser extent. Prior knowledge of Russian and Polish will be taken into account in the selection. In the course of the course, there is also a specialization in linguistics or literature.

Upon graduation, students should have adequate command of the language and be familiar with the socio-cultural conditions of the respective language area.
