The focus of the master's program Buddhist Studies (Buddhism) is the scientific examination of the Buddhist traditions, their specific ethical teachings and philosophical standpoints. As an independent course of study, the program is unique in Germany and enjoys great international recognition. The focal points of Buddhist studies at the University of Hamburg are research into the intellectual history of Buddhism and dealing with the manuscript cultures of Buddhism.
The international Master's program "Buddhist Studies" provides for specialization in one of the five regions of India, Tibet, China, Japan or Thailand. The language of instruction also depends on the choice of region (India, Tibet and Thailand: English, China and Japan: English and German). Particular value is placed on students acquiring and deepening their skills in the languages of the regions. The program does not consider Buddhism as an isolated phenomenon. It is therefore particularly examined how Buddhism in its respective form interacted with the culture, society and intellectual and religious history of a region. In addition to content-related topics, questions of methodology and the scientific approach are in the foreground. A semester abroad is mandatory for all students without international experience. The Buddhist specialist library has an excellent collection of relevant works and is an important incentive for Buddhist researchers to choose Hamburg for their research environment.
