The University of Guadalajara has a two-century-long historical tradition in Jalisco. However, its current configuration as the Jalisco University Network is recent, dating back to the structural reform initiated in 1989. This reform aimed to strengthen academic offerings in the state's main regions, make teaching programs more flexible, and revitalize research by promoting interdisciplinary work and greater integration with the training of professionals and academics at various levels.
The formation of the University Network in Jalisco allowed the University of Guadalajara to become a departmental structure, made up of five thematic university centers distributed in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara and six multidisciplinary centers in the interior of the State.
The University Center for Social Sciences and Humanities (CUCSH) emerged within the institutional framework of this university reform. Its immediate predecessor was the Executive Coordination of Social Sciences. This body was created in April 1993 to, among other tasks, strengthen support for teaching and research in the social sciences during the process of defining and integrating the University Network.
The University Center for Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Guadalajara was formally established in 1994 and promoted a new conception of academic work, in order to respond to the growing social demand for professionals and researchers trained on the basis of processes of renewal of the educational offer and the more efficient integration of the substantive functions of this institution: teaching, research and extension.
The importance of the humanities lies in the societal need to balance and understand the scientific and technological development demanded by a labor market specializing in productive tasks. The programs offered at this university aim to provide tools for analyzing and reflecting on our past, present, and future within a context that prioritizes the market and technology. It is precisely the social sciences that allow us to understand the entire social fabric, which includes technology as a means, not an end, of human development. The humanities face the challenge of reconciling and reasonably explaining our turbulent world and its social repercussions, and contributing solutions to the problems of hunger, injustice, war, inequality, and poverty.
The University Center for Social Sciences and Humanities constantly reviews and updates its undergraduate and graduate academic programs, with the goal of training professionals capable of contributing to the rescue of the best of the human being, and so that—as Schopenhauer proposed—they can explain our condition and thus alleviate our loneliness and confusion.

Admission Requirements
These are those established in the current university regulations applicable to postgraduate studies, as well as the following:
- Title or graduation certificate and proof of completion of social service in the social areas, humanities and psychology, or related to the program based on the criteria of the Academic Board.
- Have a minimum average of 80 in undergraduate studies, supported by a certificate.
- Demonstrate a minimum level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), preferably in English or its equivalent.
- Statement of reasons.
- Approve the other requirements published in the respective call for applications.
