The Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics  (hereinafter:  MLA ) contributes to forming a solid educational offer in accordance with the social needs that the University of Guadalajara intends to address with its curricular proposals and its linkage activities. It was created in the context of the Department of Studies in Indigenous Languages, directed by Dr. José Luis Iturrioz Leza, in response to a clear social demand for specialization in the study of languages and language. Thus, the MLA is aimed at teachers of mother tongue and second languages, translators, language therapists, text analysts and, in general, professionals who at some point in their career require specialized knowledge of the language or language..

The MLA was ruled by the H. General University Council in August 1996, modified in February 2006, July 2015 and October 2021. It is a  school program in face-to-face mode with a focus on research  that aims to provide theoretical tools -necessary methodologies so that students can perform satisfactorily in the academic field and in professional practice in areas linked to language and language.

In a broad sense, all linguistic research, except purely theoretical, can be considered part of applied linguistics. Associations (such as the AMLA: Mexican Association of Applied Linguistics) and applied linguistics journals are a sign that the majority adopts the broad meaning of the name of the discipline. Taking the term Applied Linguistics in its broad sense, in the MLA we include studies that do not directly offer solutions, but that constitute an essential preliminary step to solve problems related to language and language.
For example:
- Studies of variation within a language: analysis of registers, sociolects, orality, standard language, diachrony, dialectology, etc.
- Contrastive studies: Spanish/language 'x', taking into account the points of greatest difference between the two languages.
- Description of discursive and textual phenomena: studies of coherence, cohesion, narrative structures, etc. with various orientations.
- Studies of child speech (normal and limited) and language acquisition.
- Studies of the actual command of the language by children and young people to improve teaching instruments.
- Studies of linguistic policy, linguistic displacement, bilingualism, linguistic awareness and valuation, etc.
- Description of morphosyntactic and semantic phonological aspects of a given language.

The teaching mechanisms in the MLA are determined by the strategy of marking a constant dialogue between theory and practice. In this sense, teachers have a clear mandate to evaluate not only theoretical knowledge but also skills for applying theory in specific cases and in their thesis project.
