The MLA was approved by the H. General University Council in August 1996, modified in February 2006, July 2015 and October 2021. It is a classroom-based program in face-to-face mode with a research orientation that aims to provide the necessary theoretical and methodological tools so that students can perform satisfactorily in the academic field and in professional practice in areas related to language and linguistics.
In a broad sense, all linguistic research, except for purely theoretical work, can be considered part of applied linguistics. Associations (such as the AMLA: Mexican Association of Applied Linguistics) and applied linguistics journals demonstrate that most scholars adopt the broad meaning of the discipline's name. Taking the term Applied Linguistics in its broadest sense, at the MLA we include studies that do not offer direct solutions but constitute an indispensable preliminary step in resolving problems related to language.
For example:
- Studies of variation within a language: analysis of registers, sociolects, orality, standard language, diachrony, dialectology, etc.
- Contrastive studies: Spanish/language 'x', taking into account the points of greatest difference between the two languages.
- Description of discursive and textual phenomena: studies of coherence, cohesion, narrative structures, etc. with diverse orientations.
- Studies of child speech (normal and limited) and language acquisition.
- Studies of the actual language proficiency of children and young people to improve teaching tools.
- Studies of language policy, language shift, bilingualism, linguistic awareness and appreciation, etc.
- Description of phonological, morphosyntactic and semantic aspects of a given language.
The teaching methods at MLA are determined by the strategy of fostering a constant dialogue between theory and practice. In this sense, professors are clear on the objective of evaluating not only theoretical knowledge but also skills in applying theory to concrete cases and in the dissertation project.
