Mexico is currently experiencing social, political, economic, and cultural changes related to the new commercial circumstances occurring in the world, the political and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, which will continue to emerge for many years, and the changes resulting from the use of technologies, with all the modifications in social dynamics that these favor.
Certainly, the emergence of new approaches to social reality, different social representations, and perspectives open to dialogue present an undeniable opportunity for reflection, analysis, change, and research. Both societies and institutions need to be open to these emerging circumstances, facing the challenge they pose. Societies change rapidly, so paradigms require novel questioning and alternative approaches that allow them to keep pace with the times.
The Doctoral Program in Sociocultural Studies responds to these contexts, aiming to address the need for scientific production focused on social and cultural dynamics, as well as the training of highly qualified professionals capable of influencing their context and analyzing everyday municipal, state, national, and international events from diverse theoretical frameworks. Of course, the goal is not to train researchers who shirk their social responsibility, but rather to ensure their work is attentive to what is happening within the population, families, institutions, and interpersonal and intercultural relationships.
Research into social problems is by no means a dispensable activity; rather, it is a necessity and even an unavoidable urgency in developed societies. If we consider that these are the problems that hinder the development of societies—economically, politically, and educationally—there is no reason to exclude their study and the scientific understanding of their occurrence.
