Master of Mesoamerican Studies

The purpose of the Master's Program in Mesoamerican Studies (MEM) is to train high-level students in the knowledge of Mesoamerican peoples. This is a task that involves updating them on the main facts and their contributions from a multidisciplinary perspective.
One of the fundamental concerns of this postgraduate course is the lack of knowledge about indigenous societies throughout time - pre-Hispanic times, colonial times and the present - among the majority of the sectors that make up our country. This has caused the education offered in schools located in indigenous regions to be one of the most deficient, where there is no promotion of the appreciation or conservation of language, culture and human rights. Likewise, ignorance is one of the reasons that has given rise to attitudes of racism, intolerance and incomprehension regarding the presence of indigenous groups on the national stage.
Starting from the fact that the present situation is the product of the continuous action of the various components of the population, in which the Mesoamerican processes remain in force although subordinated to Western dynamics, it must be recognized that its scientific study will provide elements for the understanding and explanation of the national reality, as well as its acceptance and inclusion as part of the same country. Mesoamerica represents an accumulated experience that becomes more valuable in a world subject to the market dynamics of global capitalism and the devastating effects on the environment. In the midst of the social tensions generated by the violation of the rights of indigenous peoples, the devastation of natural resources and the dispossession of territories, the interdisciplinary study of Mesoamerica represents the opportunity to rethink its history based on new questions and approaches. critical applied by the disciplines on which our program is based.
One of the core commitments of the Master's Degree in Mesoamerican Studies consists of the training of researchers and teachers who are aware and critical of the present, a postgraduate program that promotes respect for the environment, social justice and the principles that promote interculturality inside and outside Mexico through the aforementioned LGACs and that is committed to combating the ignorance that affects indigenous peoples. In respect for life, in the common good and in the collaboration that they practice daily are the keys to the social survival of the human species. Understanding Mesoamerica, then, requires conceiving different peoples whose social and cultural dynamics advance and recede in a heterogeneous manner and, sometimes, allow them to interact over time.
