The Doctoral Program in Humanities is structured from a socio-historical perspective regarding Mexican society, which has become characterized by inequality due to the unequal distribution of wealth. Faced with such social realities, academia cannot remain indifferent, as a fundamental function of public universities is to generate relevant research on the core problems affecting the country. Therefore, a Doctoral Program in Humanities is essential to provide theoretical input and contribute to the reflection on the challenges facing contemporary Mexico.

The intention is for the Doctoral Program in Humanities to approach social problems from a theoretical perspective, following three guiding threads: culture, language, and thought. Of course, the connection to these problems is not immediate, but rather mediated by the body of theories developed in areas such as philosophy, literature, history, anthropology, linguistics, and communication studies. These disciplines have traditionally conducted their analyses of socio-historical reality using semiotic, hermeneutic, literary, and other theories. Under the assumption that theory can guide action through the formulation of regulative principles, a central aspect is that research in the humanities disciplines should have an impact on the cultural and educational spheres.

The relevance of the Doctorate in Humanities lies in the idea that education is a fundamental pillar for achieving greater democratic development in Mexico. In this sense, it represents an academic opportunity to  reflect on culture  and its specific characteristics. Furthermore, this postgraduate program also provides an opportunity to reflect on and generate constructive criticism of contemporary society and culture.
