The Mexican territory covers approximately two million km². If territorial waters are included, the area increases to five million km². Within this area lie the country's natural resources, upon which its economic and social development is based. A significant portion of Mexican territory is the western region, but it is not immune to the occasional or periodic oceanographic and meteorological processes that affect the entire world, such as El Niño, tides, tsunamis, hurricanes, droughts and floods, severe storms, frosts, and variations in the levels of lakes like Chapala and Pátzcuaro, causing casualties and material losses every year.

International scientific groups have conducted sporadic but interesting studies on these processes, but such research is insufficient to provide an explanation or solution to the phenomena occurring in this western region. Due to the inability to assess risks on land and at sea, a large number of specialists are needed. However, training in the fields of oceanography and meteorology is scarce in the country.

General Objectives of the Program

Opinion No. I/2022/340 (As of cycle 2022B)

  • To train oceanographers and physical meteorologists at the master's level with the ability to generate and analyze technical information within the framework of research projects and practical applications focused on understanding and solving local, state, and national problems related to climate change, global warming, urban air pollution, oceanographic phenomena and coastal processes, and physical limnology.
  • To contribute to the formation and consolidation of specialized research and teaching groups in the field of Hydrometeorology, providing new specialists at the master's level, with an ethical sense and social commitment.

Opinion No. I/2006/258
  • The training of researchers with a high academic level, capable of carrying out original and independent research related to the problems existing in the western region of Mexico.
  • Capable of training human resources and leading work groups in Oceanography and Physical Meteorology that promote raising the level of science in Mexico

Specific Objectives
  • To train high-level researchers, under a tutorial system, through courses and original research work, whose final objective concludes with a degree thesis.
  • Present the results of the research carried out through participation in specialized events and the publication of research articles in ISI-indexed scientific journals with national or international reach.
  • To foster and promote dissemination and outreach in the area of ​​atmospheric and oceanographic sciences, and in this way strengthen the national scientific culture and especially the regional one.
  • To fill the large gap that exists in the country in this important area of ​​natural sciences.
  • Linking with Master's programs at other institutions through specific agreements.
  • To influence the content of the academic programs of the degrees related to this Master's degree.

Admission Requirements

In addition to those required by University Regulations, the following are required: 
  • The degree certificate or graduation certificate and proof of completion of social service, in an area related to physics, oceanography, meteorology, mathematics or areas related to the Master of Science in Hydrometeorology, is at the discretion of the Academic Board. 
  • Demonstrate a minimum average of eighty with an original certificate or equivalent document. 
  • Take the aptitude test established by the Postgraduate Academic Board and pass it with the score established by the Board itself. 
  • Demonstrate a minimum level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(CEFR) in English or its equivalent. 
  • Submit a letter of intent explaining your reasons for enrolling in the program. 
  • Submit a letter of commitment to dedicate full time to the program's activities. 
  • Interview with the Admissions Committee made up of professors from the program, appointed by the Academic Board, so that they can assess the applicant's profile for the Postgraduate program. 
  • Approve the other requirements published in the respective call for applications.   
If an applicant has met all admission requirements, except for the level of English proficiency, the Academic Board may grant an extension of up to one year to prove this requirement.
