Lines of knowledge generation and application

  • Performative contexts, symbolism and identities in relation to expressive culture and its sound and/or dance representations;
  • Performative contexts, urban ethnographies and identities in relation to the practice and/or production of socially organized music, singing and dance, and
  • Historical and ethnographic documentation relating to socially organized musical or dance heritage.
 
General objective.  To train highly skilled researchers in the knowledge of diverse fieldwork methods, the study of music as a cultural and social object, of musical, dance and vocal discourse, as symbolic, structural, interpretive or cognitive systems.
 
Specific objectives
  • Develop new lines of work, based on knowledge and deep criticism of the advantages and difficulties that can be observed in the applications of certain methodological systems of study. 
  • To create a means for professionals in Ethnomusicology to update and deepen their knowledge on an ongoing basis. 
  • To train scientific critics and analysts who deal with the most varied manifestations of music and bodily and vocal expression.
  • To promote the development and study of new areas of knowledge in the field of music, dance, singing and other acoustic manifestations of the expressive culture of ethnic groups, rural and urban societies. 
  • To satisfy the need for objectives dedicated to teaching and interdisciplinary research in various fields of ethnic music and culture, with a postgraduate level of training, which is indispensable in our country, and which leads to raising the academic quality and the opportunity to increase preparation that allows the teaching-learning process to be carried out with greater accuracy and effectiveness. 
  • To provide professionals in the field with the necessary training to contribute, together with those responsible for teaching, to the development of more efficient and comprehensive study programs in the various fields of anthropology, social history, and ethnomusicology. 
  • To establish a level of studies comparable to that of international institutions, which fosters high-quality research and teaching at all higher levels and 
  • that allows the graduate to participate adequately in a highly competitive market and professional field. 
  • To train academic staff capable of reviving, analyzing and understanding the complex problems of the relationships between culture and society, the ideological and spatio-temporal determinants that operate in cultural objects. 
  • To enable the development of innovative research capacities and projects that deal with unexplored or little-studied fields of native or regional musical cultures. 
  • To contribute to the dissemination of theory and practice on the study of music in native cultures. 
  • To promote new models for the study of ethnic sound, native ability and the expression of song and language, which can be approached from collegiate and multidisciplinary perspectives. 
  • To provide the necessary training to produce effective and up-to-date bibliographic and didactic material, both to the teacher and the researcher of ethnomusicology and cultural anthropology.

Admission Requirements

In addition to those stipulated by university regulations, the following will apply: 
  • Bachelor's degree or copy of the official record of the bachelor's degree examination: in the areas of Social Sciences and Humanities, Language Sciences, Communication Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Philosophy and Letters, Psychology. Applicants from other areas of knowledge will have to be evaluated by the Academic Board. 
  • Certificate of studies with a minimum average of 80.
  • To have graduated by thesis or, in the case of graduation by average, to offer an academic work similar to that of a bachelor's thesis. 
  • Take the Ceneval EXANI III exam. 
  • Recent proof of reading comprehension in English issued by TOEFL, Proulex, UNAM or another university institution. 
  • Interview with one of the members of the Academic Board. 
  • Letter of commitment to full-time dedication to postgraduate studies. 
  • Those additional ones established by the call for applications.
