The role of Organic Chemistry in the development of modern Chemistry has been widely recognized by the international scientific community through the granting of numerous Nobel Prizes to scientists who focus their activity in this area. The Doctoral Program in Organic Chemistry, which can be accessed through the Interuniversity Master's Degree in Organic Chemistry or other comparable Master's degrees, provides adequate training in the areas of Chemistry, Materials Science and Life Sciences, among others, and constitutes therefore the first stage of the teaching or research career. It also facilitates access to different types of companies, including pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, food manufacturers, cosmetics, paints and the entire industry related in some way to Chemistry. This doctoral program obtained the Mention for Excellence by the Ministry of Education (Ref. MEE2011-0052). (Resolution of October 6, 2011 of the General Secretariat of Universities). This mention was maintained during the academic years 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014 with favorable follow-up reports. As of 2014, this mention of the Spanish doctoral system disappeared.

Admission Requirements

If you are from an EU country, you will have access if you hold a bachelor's degree, or equivalent, from a Spanish university or from a university in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and a university Masters degree. You may also apply if you have a minimum number of 300 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 (one academic year) must be at Masters level. ECTS are credits recognised in the European Higher Education Area and are equivalent to 25-30 hours of work.

If you are a graduate from outside the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) you can access the university without the need to certify your degrees, once the UCM verified that the level of studies is equivalent to a Masters degree at a university in Spain. Access via this route does not in any case imply the official certification of your degree prior to starting your Masters course.

To complete your doctoral studies you will need to present a doctoral thesis consisting of an original work of research by the student in any field of knowledge.
