Studies on the Spanish Language began to be taught at the Complutense University around 1520. A short time later, studies on Spanish Literature were incorporated into the University's teachings, and, already in the 20th century, those on Hispano-American Literature, which means that we are facing one of the oldest university studies of Higher Education in Spain and before a center of national and international reference. At present, studies on Degree in Spanish Language and Literature have a renewed interest for demographic reasons (more than 400 million Spanish speakers), cultural reasons (literature in Spanish is one of the most outstanding in the world not only for its artistic values, but also because of the richness and complexity of the socio-cultural visions it transmits) and geostrategic and economic ones (Spanish-speaking societies stand out for their growing economic and political relevance in today's globalized world). All this means that the demand for Spanish as a relationship language is increasing: it is already the second relationship language on the planet.
