The objective of the Doctoral Program in Social Work is to provide its members with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to design and develop research work, preferably applied, in the areas of knowledge of social work and social services. Research that improves knowledge and critical analysis in the field of social intervention. As Raya (2009, p. 48) indicates, it is important to take into account "the multifaceted nature of social work", which pays attention to different population groups with very different problems, needs and social aspirations. Likewise, it is necessary to underline that one of the fundamental objectives of research in social work is to explore how social problems arise, are maintained and are expressed, in their individual, family and collective dimensions, in order to try to deal with them in the best possible way. way possible. Another objective, also essential, is to analyze the way and the degree in which the different forms of social intervention contribute to the eradication of citizen problems and to the improvement of the different dimensions linked to social welfare. Thus, two research groups attached to the Faculty of Social Work participate in the program, whose members also collaborate with researchers from numerous universities and national and international research centers in carrying out projects, student stays, evaluation and supervision of doctoral theses and publication of scientific works.

Admission Requirements

If you are from an EU country, you will have access if you hold a bachelor's degree, or equivalent, from a Spanish university or from a university in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and a university Masters degree. You may also apply if you have a minimum number of 300 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 (one academic year) must be at Masters level. ECTS are credits recognised in the European Higher Education Area and are equivalent to 25-30 hours of work.   

If you are a graduate from outside the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) you can access the university without the need to certify your degrees, once the UCM verified that the level of studies is equivalent to a Masters degree at a university in Spain. Access via this route does not in any case imply the official certification of your degree prior to starting your Masters course. 

To complete your doctoral studies you will need to present a doctoral thesis consisting of an original work of research by the student in any field of knowledge.
