This interuniversity Doctoral Program in Tourism is justified in two ways: firstly, based on the need to train researchers in various areas of tourism and, secondly, due to the opportunity to integrate the work of research teams with a long tradition networking at national and international level. The program has the support of basic institutions/entities for tourism research. Tourism is a key sector for Spain and there is a high demand for basic and operational research that provides solutions to the great social, environmental and economic challenges of this activity. In the context of the social sciences, it is an object of interdisciplinary knowledge that concerns a set of activities, carried out by both private companies and public institutions. As a field of research, its dimension in socioeconomic development and in the effects on the territory is relevant, through its ability to value different existing resources (natural, cultural, social) and through different actions and projects can convert or transform a resource in tourist product. In addition, as an economic activity, it demands and consumes public and private resources.

Admission Requirements

If you are from an EU country, you will have access if you hold a bachelor's degree, or equivalent, from a Spanish university or from a university in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and a university Masters degree. You may also apply if you have a minimum number of 300 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 (one academic year) must be at Masters level. ECTS are credits recognised in the European Higher Education Area and are equivalent to 25-30 hours of work.

If you are a graduate from outside the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) you can access the university without the need to certify your degrees, once the UCM verified that the level of studies is equivalent to a Masters degree at a university in Spain. Access via this route does not in any case imply the official certification of your degree prior to starting your Masters course.

To complete your doctoral studies you will need to present a doctoral thesis consisting of an original work of research by the student in any field of knowledge.
