The Degree in Semitic and Islamic Studies , with the Hebrew and Aramaic languages, form part of the founding origin of the Complutense University and of its first great work, the Complutense Polyglot Bible. In 1843, once converted into a Central University, Arabic Studies began. In 1994, they were extended to Persian and Turkish language teachings in Islamic studies, as well as Ancient Near Eastern languages in Hebrew studies. The School of Arabists, which focuses its work on the culture of Al-Andalus, and the School of Hebraists, which deals with the Bible and the culture of the Sephardic Jews, are the result of this long research tradition, and the works have been extended to the knowledge of the contemporary Jewish and Islamic world. Both cultures represent one of the most important heritages of humanity. Completing this degree at the UCM will allow students who opt for the major in Arabic to know and satisfactorily use the Arabic language, in which more than 400 million speakers communicate, and become familiar with Islamic culture, which brings together more than 1,500 million people. In the case of non-native Spanish speakers, according to the Agreement of the Governing Council of January 29, 2019 (BOUC of February 7, 2019), which approves the Spanish language requirements for admission to Degree and Master's degree and linguistic/language skills, all students from non-Spanish-speaking countries or educational systems must prove a knowledge of Spanish according to the CEFR level B2, at the time of submitting the application for admission to the Degree.
