The Graduate Program in Archeology has existed at the University of São Paulo since 1972, having originated as an area of concentration within the scope of the Social Anthropology program at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences.

Due to the autonomy and specificity of its approaches, the number of disciplines taught and the growing number of professors who work in it, the Graduate Program in Archeology (PPGArq) gradually acquired greater autonomy until, in 2004, it became in an independent program, based at the Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of the University of São Paulo (MAE/USP).

Our goal is to train and qualify professionals to develop scientific research, teaching and other asset management activities. PPGArq MAE/USP offers a wide range of research possibilities associated with Archeology and Prehistory of Brazil, Historical Archeology and Archeology of the Mediterranean and Middle East, as well as within the scope of studies of material culture and art of African societies. The program's research fields are diverse and include topics such as: formation of the archaeological record; forms of contact, continuity and cultural change; material culture and ethnicity; symbolic representations and religion; ethnoarchaeology; landscape and territoriality; social organization and power; artifacts and cultural agents; indigenous history.
