The Master's and Doctorate programs officially started their activities at the Institute of Biosciences at USP in 1970. However, in fact, the first guidelines date back to 1970, as they still took place within the scope of the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of the University of Sao Paulo. University of São Paulo, before the university reform. Therefore, it is certainly one of the oldest and most traditional graduate programs in the biological field in the country.
Since its foundation, it has had renowned scientists in the country and abroad, for their research capacity and guidance, such as Crodowaldo Pavan, Antônio Brito da Cunha, Oswaldo Frota-Pessoa, Pedro Henrique Saldanha, Luis Edmundo de Magalhães, Bernardo Beiguelman, among others. By the end of 2008, we had trained 335 masters and 305 doctors. The program, due to its quality, age and tradition, played a fundamental role in the nucleation of several other research and teaching centers in the country. Several of its graduates are currently professors at public and private universities or work in quality research centers.
