The Graduate Program in General Physiology (PPGFG) aims to train intellectually independent human resources, qualified for teaching and research by understanding the scientific process. As a result of this vision, the program shares the basic specific objectives of a training program for Masters and Doctors in Biological Sciences, such as enabling students to critically analyze the literature, formulating questions and hypotheses, understanding the most relevant methods in the subareas of interest and the understanding of the production process of scientific knowledge. In addition, the program understands the Doctorate as a preparation for professional research that includes capacity for the production and dissemination of Science, knowledge of the state of the art in the research topic.
The program is focused on training students qualified for the guidance process and, therefore, capable of creating new groups and expanding research horizons through independent action. In specific terms, the program seeks to provide students with favorable conditions for understanding i) Physiology as an integrative discipline, ii) the convergences of Physiology with other areas of knowledge, iii) the diversity of approaches and objectives of contemporary Physiology, iv) the multiplicity of models and techniques, and v) the role of physiology in the context of Brazilian biodiversity. Among its four lines of research, the PPGFG encompasses multiple approaches, objectives and research models.
