The basic objective of the program is the academic training of professors and researchers for professionals with a degree in the health area, doctors and similar professionals, to work in universities (public and private) or in the private area, ready to conduct clinical or experimental research in the perspective of interdisciplinary. Thus, it does not have the character of specialization, professional improvement or technical training.

He works in the areas of the Department of Gastroenterology (Clinical Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Surgery of the Digestive System, Coloproctology, Endoscopy, Nutrition and Organ Transplantation) and related areas.

In 2006, the Department of Gastroenterology, with the aim of increasing the quality of its Graduate program and reformulating the programs of Surgery of the Digestive System and Clinical Gastroenterology, carried out a process of merging the programs, enhancing our institutional advantages. The unification process was approved by the Rector of the University of São Paulo in 2009, receiving the designation of Postgraduate Program in Gastroenterology Science, Masters and Doctorate in the strict sense, by the Evaluation Chamber.
