The main objective of Neurology Program is to train researchers in broadly applied neurosciences, able to use scientific methodology in the generation of knowledge, particularly on themes and peculiarities of our population, without ceasing to contribute to the expansion of knowledge of universal interest. Unlike other programs that focus on relatively specific areas, our program guides projects in the areas of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Child Neurology, Neuropsychology and Experimental Neurology. The extension of our program justifies the large number of advisors and students.

The themes of our research emphasize: population epidemiological studies and casuistry extracted from our clinical activity, with the inclusion of new study methods such as molecular biology and studies of neurodegeneration and neuroregeneration mechanisms; evaluation of new diagnostic and therapeutic resources, using the case-control and clinical trial model, respectively; and neurosurgical research on new access routes resulting from the deepening of knowledge about topographic neuroanatomy and advances in therapeutic methods based on functional neurosurgery to control pain and movement disorders; evaluation of new pedagogical methods in teaching neurosciences, particularly the virtual reality method; studies on the neuropsychological impact of diseases common in our environment and neurosurgical procedures. The opening of our course to non-medical professionals, which began in 2002, has expanded the multidisciplinarity essential for research in applied neurosciences.
