Postgraduate studies in Geography originated in the university reform of 1969. It derived, therefore, from the set of reforms that the Military Government implemented in the country's educational sector, as a result of the Atcon Report and the MEC/USAID Agreements. Those reforms meant the implementation, at the national level, of a “Postgraduate system, conceived as selective and destined to train professors for higher education and high-level researchers”.
This reform broke with the process of academic degrees created after the foundation of the University of São Paulo, in the 1930s. After the formation of the first groups of students, the process of academic degrees was instituted. At that time, those with an original thesis signed up for their defense even without having a supervisor (1940s and 1950s).
