At the end of the 1990s, on the initiative of Professor Antônio Campos Neto, then a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo (FMRP-USP), the Postgraduate Program (PPG) in Basic Immunology and Applied (IBA). Although there was a Department of Parasitology, Microbiology and Immunology, there was no PPG that dealt with research in Immunology. The Doctor. Campos Neto brought together a small group of researchers from basic areas (Dr. Ricardo Ribeiro dos Santos, Dr. João Santana da Silva, Dr. Célio Lopes Silva, Dr. Maria Cristina Roque Antunes Barreira) and FMRP-USP clinics (Dr. Júlio César Voltarelli, Dr. Eduardo Antonio Donadi, Dr. José Elpídio Barbosa, Dr. Ivan Fiori de Carvalho, Dr. Willy Sarti), and also from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ribeirão Preto at USP (Dr. Yara Maria Lucisano Valim and Dr. Ana Isabel de Assis Pandocchi), idealizing, from the beginning, a translational program.

From the beginning to the present day, the PPG IBA is configured as a supradepartmental, a characteristic that allowed and still allows the interaction of professors from several Departments with a common research interest in Basic and/or Applied Immunology. From its creation to the present day, the mission of the PPG IBA is to train distinguished professionals in the area of Basic and Applied Immunology, capable of collecting data related to research projects and interpreting them ethically and with a critical sense.

Furthermore, the mission of our Program is to promote scientific development in Brazil; return to society the financial investment in science through the development of new vaccines, diagnostic methods and immunotherapies; and to work so that our science has worldwide recognition for its quality and seriousness. We offer solid training in immunology with a view to collaboration with other Programs in related areas and encourage the development of basic, applied and translational research. The IBA also seeks to offer students an entrepreneurial vision, which aims to add value to knowledge by developing patents and working in companies focused on biotechnology.
