The geographer's basic attribution is the study of the production of space and territorial organization, where the interrelationships that society establishes with nature are evident. He therefore studies the dimension of human and natural processes that shape the earth's surface. In this way, the geographer develops basic and applied research in universities and specialized institutes, and may also dedicate himself to primary, secondary and higher education.

The inspection of the exercise of the profession of Geographer is carried out by the Regional Council of Engineering, Architecture and Agronomy CREA (Law 6664, of 1979, which regulates the profession ).

The profession of geographer, therefore, requires broad and critical training, given the fact that it deals with a wide variety of topics, ranging from society to nature. Within this perspective, it can perform a series of functions. The main ones are listed below:

  • is dedicated to environmental and regional territorial planning, studying urban and rural areas, which involves economic and political analyzes of housing issues, the dynamics of social classes, the production of space, as well as the preservation of historical heritage;
  • contributes to the Cartography area, producing thematic maps and manipulating information through geoprocessing techniques;
  • it advises public bodies on tracing the boundaries of states, municipalities and administrative regions. Deals with Aerophotogeography and Remote Sensing, reading and interpreting images produced by radars, aircraft and orbital satellites;
  • draws up reports on the environmental impacts of civil engineering works;
  • guides tourist development projects and, above all, local, regional, national and global development projects.
