Postgraduate courses in Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences at the University of São Paulo (USP) take place within the scope of the Postgraduate Program in Sociology (PPGS). This began its activities, in the current model of courses at the Master's and Doctorate level, in 1971. Heir to a long tradition in the history of Social Sciences in Brazil, its origin dates back to the two former chairs of Sociology at the former Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters, which, constituted by the so-called French Mission, marked the foundation of USP, in 1934. For decades, the PPGS has acted as a protagonist in the field of sociology in Brazil, in addition to participating in broad international networks. Its faculty makes a significant contribution to increasing the research agenda in the area and, above all, for training new professionals. In fact, the Program was a pioneer in constituting generations of imminent researchers, in addition to contributing to the elaboration and conduct of research policies, promotion and evaluation of other graduate programs in Sociology in Brazil, for the constitution of associations scientific institutions and the main spaces for intellectual dialogue that exist in the country today.
