Tourism has changed profoundly in recent decades, it has become more competitive and professional. Consequently, it is necessary for the new professional in the area to understand and be prepared to work in a broad service sector, in which tourism is a center of connections between related activities. In this scenario, predicted by numerous authors at the beginning of this century, the need to understand knowledge as a highly competitive differential in new societies was already indicated. Certainly, there has been progress in this direction in the last decade, with the holding of national and international seminars discussing the development of tourism under the most different aspects. Brazilian scientific production in the area has seen an important increase, mainly due to the consolidation of the few stricto sensu specific graduate programs. Scientific journals have proliferated and are becoming more qualified. The researchers are concerned with establishing partnerships and international contacts. It is in this context that the Graduate Program in Tourism at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities of the University of São Paulo is inserted. The program considers the advancement of knowledge in the area, the new paradigms of tourism thinking and the need to think about development models that analyze the Brazilian reality and the new conceptions of the world and society.
