The area of ​​Genetics by its nature is wide, extending from the Genetics of Microorganisms to Plant, Animal and Human Genetics. The approaches in the investigations use from the methods of classical genetics, to the most modern methods of molecular biology.

The postgraduate program aims to improve the training of higher education professors, train researchers and prepare specialized professionals in some sub-areas of Genetics, configured by the lines of research of the permanent professors of the course.

The laboratories where students develop their research are well set up, systematically receiving students and/or professors from other graduate courses who wish to implement, in their universities, the techniques practiced in FMRP Genetics. From the student candidate for the Master's degree, the Area basically expects a good training at the teaching professional level; for that, the student is required to complete the credits in more comprehensive subjects; Candidates for the title of Doctor are oriented to fulfill more specialized disciplines, both within the area of ​​concentration and in other areas related to their individual research project.

The course accepts students with training in the biological field (biologists, agronomists, doctors, veterinarians, zootechnicians, pharmacists, biochemists, etc.) and requires training in Medicine for those who intend to study Clinical Genetics. Training in other areas does not prevent admission to the course.
