The Graduate Program in Clinical Surgery began in 1971, and is currently only stricto sensu and offers courses at the Master's and Doctoral level. In its early days, it prioritized the development of high technical specialization in surgical subareas, including experimental surgery. However, as it matured, the program began to be offered to medical and non-medical specialists with the aim of providing academic training, mainly aimed at training in research with a translational approach in the surgical area. The incorporation of the Anatomy area in the Department of Surgery substantially helped in the implementation of the translational vision of the research.

There are currently eleven lines of research related to the areas of activity of the program's advisors. These lines are distributed in two areas of concentration: “Surgery”, which involves research and innovation projects related to clinical-surgical activities, with emphasis on the critical analysis of access aspects, diagnostic and therapeutic processes, and “Morphology and Experimental Medicine ”, in which experimental projects predominate, as well as studies involving tissues, human and animal body fluids, but developed mainly by non-medical researchers. This arrangement has enabled a good interaction between applied science and basic science with benefits for the quality of research. In 2020, due to the presence of professionals working in the intensive care sector, which is linked to the Department of Surgery and Anatomy, a new line of research was created, “Assessment and Care of the Critical Patient”. This line contemplates the interface of the surgical areas with the critical patient, as well as society's search for better care for the critically ill patient, as in the COVID pandemic.
